Thanks, you're right. There were rebreathers but not scuba. Olexa was trained to swim as an army Sea Scout. Program was dropped and he never was deployed as such.

From what I've read, these were free divers led by Draper Kauffman. Their primary job was as demolition experts (UDT). Interesting read so far.

I recently read Swan or Slog, a really good book about the British army during Op Veritable. Even after 80 years, the author showed that there are myths which need to be dispelled.

    Feuer!

Germany heavy artilleryman (150 mm guns) account of warfare on the Eastern Front. His battery dissolves after it i chased across the Oder into Berlin. From Berlin he flees west in a kubelwagenand they come across a tank with a white star. Thinking it was Soviet, his comrades almost fire on it with their MG (fat chance hurting a tank). Then he realizes that one of the soldiers is black and the Soviets had no black soldiers. Therefore the tank is American. He orders the MG to be lowered and they surrenedered. At the black GI's insistence, he surrenders his P-08 to him and the grinning GI gives him a pack of cigarettes in exchange. He then knew he was safe. Post-war his father (who was a naturalized American) applies for his Visa and he immigrates with his wife and child. His final observation:

In Germany it is Gott mit uns. In America it is In God We Trust. What will God do?

Two different nations, two diffferent outlooks.
