Cemetery for Wehrmacht soldiers opened in Russia - RT Top Stories A new cemetery has been opened in central Russia, but this one is a bit different from others across the country: The site honors the German soldiers killed in Russia during World War II. Almost 25,000 Germans have already been buried in a cemetery near the village Besedino in Kursk Region, in a move Russia hopes will be viewed as a sign of reconciliation.
Really good of them to do such a thing. Did any German or Russian veterans attend the opening? Are their similar cemeteries, memorials, etc outside of Russia/Germany? More specifically in other areas where Axis and Allied forces were fighting.
Does anyone know of a way to find who is buried there? My grandfather was a German army officer, and he died and was buried in the Kursk region in June 1942. That was way before the Battle of Kursk. My mother wants to know if he was moved to the new cemetery. (She came over to the US after World War II.)
Welcome to the forums Rschauer, At first glance, perhaps contacting the German or Russian government divisions responisible for military burials can help? The mayor of Kursk had given a speech at the opening according to the article so perhaps try contacting his office for more information? If they don't have the answer perhaps they will be nice enough to point you in the right direction? Russia Profile - Who's Who?
Here is the website for the German War Graves Commission, they should be able to help but in the case that they are not (given the potential location of the cometary) they can at least refer you to the proper source. Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. - Arbeit für den Frieden
Wow! Amazing but a very nice gesture. I read that the Soviets bulldozed every German cemetery but did not know they kept records as to locations. Glad that they did and are doing this.
