Hi Folks, I would really appreciate it if someone could help me identify this unit crest. This soldier's name was Woodrow C. Reynolds, and I would like to figure out which unit he was in so that I can continue research on his military career. My first impression was that this was a 13th Infantry crest, but I keep doubting myself. Can anyone shine some light on this one for me? Thanks a bunch! View attachment 15892
It bears a strong resemblance to the 8th's DUI, but I would like to see insignia from other units in the 8th. Any more info on this man?
Thanks for the reply. Well, He enlisted in '42 as a pvt. in March of '42. His personnel records were destroyed in the fire, but the reconstructed record shows that he was wounded in April of '45, a bullet wound through the thigh. I presume this was during the nasty fight for Siegen. The diagnosis is dated April 6th, 1945. He was discharged from a detachment of patients in the states in Oct. of '45.The photo that I uploaded is dated 1942. That is all I have on him so far. Thanks!
ggent001, Loked at all the DUI that was organic to the 8th Inf. Div. and eliminated everything exept the 13th Infantry Regiment. The 28th IR and 121st IR are not even close. The 28th Field Artillary isn't close, couldn't find a DU for the 43rd and 56th Field Artillary. The DUI in the picture is pertty fuzzy, but looks like a shield with a cross and something on top. That's my story and I'm sticking to it
Thanks for the reply. That was my first thought..the crest just looks odd in the photo and I don't have access to some of the more obscure units connected to the 8th. I was hoping someone with a bit more experinece in the DUI area might help rule out the other units like the FA battalions. G
Here's the website for the 8th Infantry Division Association which appears to be active (they have an event scheduled for July 2012). You could try contacting them to see if they have any records (i.e. list of casualties, regimental rosters) that might help you. Also, here is a website that has a downloadable PDF of the 8th ID in WW2 combat history.
Guys, It is much appreciated. Leaning towards that myself. I'm going to give it a shot. If anyone can help me rule out the more obscure units I'd be appreciative. Thanks! G
If he is indeed part of the 13th I would be interested to know if he was there at the liberation of Rennes France. My Father was a wounded POW in the hospital there and I am interested in getting more details on the taking of the town.
