Thank you for this informative and meaningful link! I received a sabbatical to study English country house architecture in 1980 so I rented a Mini, a real one !!!! and drove 6200 miles around the UK. While there I visited many WW2 airfields , my favorite being abandoned ones on farms, the remnants still existing. I found control towers used as farm storage, some filled with hay and Quonset buildings with tattered magazine pictures still glued to the walls but disintegrating. To stand on the upper part of a tower, with rusty rails and just imagine what it was like was amazing. Property owners were universally helpful often inviting me to their houses for much appreciated tea. Many local pubs in the Fens had old photos from the war. I discovered them from Kent to Scotland , both RAF and USAAF fields, bomber and fighter bases. Of course some like Biggin Hill are modern airports but the abandoned ones are probably slowly disappearing. Sad but inevitable. I will not get back there again but will remember it until I die. The collective courage of all those men that took off from these bases seems to remain... Gaines
