Movie stars who were war veterans

I was reading a biography on the late James Doohan ( Scotty from Star Trek ) he was a Canadian Army vet who went ashore on Juno Beach on D Day . He was wounded and had a finger shot off his right hand. Also there was James Stewart who flew bombers over Germany with the USAAF .And Eddie Albert who I believe ( someone correct me if i'm wrong ) operated a landing craft . I know there were lots more ...

I can't believe that they left Nile Kinnick off the sports heroes list. If anyone is not familiar with his story, he was the Heisman Trophy winner in 1939 and was killed in a flight training accident due to mechanical failure.

Wayne Morris has got to rate a mention. He played a the drunken coward Lieutenant Roget in Stanley Kubrick's unforgetable Paths of Glory. Morris made the character pitifully human and he was not diminished by all those greater Hollywood stars in the film.
Morris flew F6F Hellcats off the carrier Essex and had seven confirmed Japanese aeroplanes to his credit. I read somewhere he also wrote off seven Hellcats. If anyone hasnt seen it, do your best to see Paths of Glory, even if just for the performance of Wayne Morris

Geeze, W Morris died of a heart attack while visiting the AC USS Bonn Homme Richard. Nice bit there.

 

My favourite would have to be Bud Tingwell...One of Australia's greatest ever actors...and an ex spitfire pilot just quietly...

 

Yes, we could definitely use more Audie Murphys.....

 

Admired Jimmy Stewart. He was old Hollywood. New Hollywood can kick rocks.

 

Yeah he was way cool...imagine hearing him stutter over the intercom...would make you smile for sure...have a pic of him in his uniform...looked the goods for sure...stealy eyes, mind a million miles away from films.
