We sort of had Ricky for an Emergency Moderator already. Not that he wasn't worthy of general Moderating powers, but they were distributed to him two weeks ago for this specific purpose.

(And they're mine to take back! Muhahaha :D ;) )

For those of you who had not noticed, Panzer Profile & I are on our own again as Moderators.

    Please bear with us... :D

On a personal note, I have noticed a wee bit of animosity & bad language creeping into the forum. Please desist! I know that we have called ourselves the 'Forum Family' in the past, but that is no excuse... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ricky

    Just a slightly overdue update,
as you can see, we now have 2 new Moderators.

Notmi, who now looks after the Re-enactment and Guns Galore sections

Tom, who now looks after the Library and Leaders of WW2 sections

    Cheers,
    Ricky

To make it easier to differentiate between members and moderators and administrators, all administrators now hold the rank of General of the Army, and all moderators not hold the rank of General.

    Update to the above...

As you can see, all Administrators now wear the rank of Administrator with a new emblem, and the same goes for Moderators with the rank of Moderator. As members, the Admin and Moderator team will from now on be independent of the regular ranking system you're used to.

Thanks to Christian's activities upgrading and tweaking the forum, the Admins (Ricky, Roel, Christian) are once more able to adapt members' profiles: changes and undoing changes concerning rank, username, user permissions, the works. Please feel free to contact any of the Administrators if you have any questions or requests.

Always willing to learn, how exactly does a Moderator moderate, what do they do, how do the do it and how are they selected?
    Is it by democratic vote?
I ask this because I notice that the moderator for Forum Gaming is Moonchild who has not posted since July last year and that thread seems to be quite active without him.

Moderators basically keep an eye on things in their respective forums, to make sure that discussions doesn't run out of control. They can edit and remove contents, and move threads.

Administrators can do all the moderators can, in all the forums, but they can also ban and delete members.

The selection is by no means democratic, in that the administrators decide who will be moderators. The moderators are selected based on experience and personality, to insure that they won't abuse their powers.

Moderators moderate by using the features that become available to them once an Administrator updates their permissions to that of a Moderator. These features involve the ability to edit and delete other people's posts, move, remove or lock topics, split threads and so on. There's buttons for all of these things that regular users can't see. Moderators are supposed to be used to keep forum organized and the posts according to the guidelines. Moderator permissions can be granted by section, which is why we have section moderators - a small, convenient subject area, usually picked to suit the selected moderator.

As to the selection process, usually the Admin decide among each other whether we are in need of a new moderator, and then the liable candidates are discussed. It is not so much democratic as it is a consensus policy, seeing as there are only two or three people who need to come to an agreement. Once the decision to take on a new moderator has been made, we usually find little reason to repeal his position unless there is some sort of problem.

Moonchild was given the position of Moderator in the Gaming section simply because he used to be the one planning, organizing and running the games. The design game we play there now is entirely different and he no longer has a hand in it at all. There really isn't a reason for his moderator status right now, other than that there is no reason to remove it either; the section does not require an active moderator.

Edit - Christian posted while I was typing

Hello David, how's Dorset these days, happy times at Lulworth and Durdle Door, not forgetting Wool station and whapping those 77's across Bindle Hill.
' Klar ass Muud', ja, good to see that your 'Krautsprechen' is as good as mine,"Woodbine Fräulien?"..... so back on track.
Well I did manage to follow Christian's eight lines of explanation but must admit, got lost half way down L.W.Roel's twenty.!!!

To L.W.Roel, nothing wrong with your English Roel, far better than mine, nearly up to Blaster's standard, ;) your English has evidently been taught correctly and you've got it, no problem there.
But, you seem to fall into the same trap as some of our local (Parish) councillors, using half a dozen words when one would suffice.
Please do not take this as a criticism but as a friendly word of advice from someone who has been around for some time.
