Sir Patrick "Paddy" Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO , OBE died on 10 June at the age of 96.
A SOE officer, famous for his action in Greece during WW2.
As a British army major he was headed a team of British special operations officers and Greek resistance fighters that captured the German military commander of Crete, Gen. Karl Kreipe. After a furious manhunt, the small band crossed over the island’s snow-topped mountains to a southern point, from which he was shipped to Egypt.
He wrote many books, Historical and Traveler's and he lived most of the year in Greece, near the village of Kardamyli in southern Peloponissos.

I remember reading about his capture of Kreipe and his subsequent escape several years ago.
