Brown 'appalled' by planned Islamist march - Yahoo! News

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday he was "appalled" at a planned march by Islamists through the town where Britain's Afghanistan war dead are repatriated, branding it "abhorrent and offensive".

The group Islam4UK wants to commemorate the Muslim civilians killed in the conflict with a march through Wootton Bassett, where hundreds of people regularly gather to pay their respects to dead British soldiers as their coffins pass through the main street.

Although no date has been set, the suggestion of such a protest, in a place that has come to symbolise public respect for the war dead, has caused uproar.

"I am personally appalled by the prospect of a march in Wootton Bassett," Brown said in a statement.

"I believe that we as a nation should honour those brave servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

"Wootton Bassett has a special significance for us all at this time, as it has been the scene of the repatriation of many members of our armed forces who have tragically fallen.

"Any attempt to use this location to cause further distress and suffering to those who have lost loved ones would be abhorrent and offensive."

    Kai,
I've been noticing for some time the influx, for lack of a better word, of the large Islamic immigration entering Britain. Also the 'demand' for an Islamic state within a state where it pertains to the immigrants rights or values over established laws. I am just wondering how that is transpiring? I read in yesterday's paper of a group of illegal immigrants here in the States who are marching to bring attention to "their" rights. No word yet on where or when the meaning of 'Illegal' became "As Long As It Does Not Offend the Offender" or "If you don't Mine".

How about Kabul? That's a lot more appropriate. The UK could fly the whole group there and leave them to demonstrate to their heart's content. Of course, I wouldn't gurantee a free return flight or re-entry to the UK either. But that's just me.

Even though I consider myself to be a political liberal, this grates me the wrong way. I have no issues with people immigrating into a country, but if they don't like it there, why did they come in the first place? It seems a bit presumptuous to demand an enclave with their own laws in a place that allowed them in in the first place. Basically, if you don't like it here, don't come.

Scary as it sounds, I like Texson's idea. It has some real merit.

The so-called "Sí, se puede" or "Yes we can!" marches by illegal immigrants (mostly, if not entirely Mexican in orgin) and their supporters here in the US brought a huge backlash of anti-illegal legislation, calls for increased enforcement and, basically demolished their cause.
In Arizona the results are a bit more than three years later that the illegal population has dropped nearly 50%, violent crime has dropped to the lowest level in over two decades, property crimes have plummetted and, in general, the state is better off in the wake of that march.

Maybe the one going on now from Florida to D.C. will have the same effect. We can but hope.

I think that will depend on the media. If they downplay or minimally report it they can keep a lid on the backlash from it. If the orgainzers are able to keep the Mexican national flags down in number that will help their cause too.
The original marches were widely, even giddily, reported by the MSM. Pictures of tens of thousands of illegals and their supporters waving Mexican flags in the streets brought a swift and (due to the MSM being rife with Leftists who were uncomprehending) unexpected (by the organizers and Leftists in the MSM) backlash that crippled their movement overnight.

Some of the Nutters will probably try to demonstarte during a repariation. Then the whole thing will kick off big time! That won't help anybody and yes, we're a democracy and yes they have a right to express their views but no sane person can expect to propose this and not cause problems.

The idea is daft. It WILL cause offence and it would most certainly lead to a violent confrontation. The people of a sleepy English town neither want it or need it. So long as educated mischief makers like this man think they're being smart & exercising their democratic rights, which they only have since moving here..............(boy do they often fight extradition back home)................relations between the relgious groups have no chance.

it amazes me,they come here for a better life, then when trouble stirs up in their own country wish to protest and demonstrate here about the wrong doings back home! if it is so good back home why did they leave? dont come here to protest about the country you left behind, get on with becoming part of the country you now want to be part of,but why do we tolerate this sort of crap gnawing away at our liberties the way we live the way we want to live,as erich said a better place indeed.do you ever hear of expats living abroad moaning at they way this countries changes have affected our lives here? NO! so why should we tolerate these morons whose only interest is to self destruct society..b....y disgrace, get on with life!!! dont keep imposing yours on us........

I find it ironic that a group calling for Islamic Law would use a Democratic right to assembly to protest anything. God, are these people backward or what?

    I agree with that!
The raising of the Mexican flag above the Stars and Stripes at a California school and singing the National Anthem in Spanish I think was the real death blow.

    The British

Take some Picts, Celts and Silures
    And let them settle,
Then overrun them with Roman conquerors.

Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years
Add lots of Norman French to some
Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously.

Mix some hot Chileans, cool Jamaicans, Dominicans,
Trinidadians and Bajans with some Ethiopians, Chinese,
    Vietnamese and Sudanese.

Then take a blend of Somalians, Sri Lankans, Nigerians
    And Pakistanis,
    Combine with some Guyanese
    And turn up the heat.

Sprinkle some fresh Indians, Malaysians, Bosnians,
Iraqis and Bangladeshis together with some
    Afghans, Spanish, Turkish, Kurdish, Japanese
    And Palestinians
Then add to the melting pot.

    Leave the ingredients to simmer.

As they mix and blend allow their languages to flourish
    Binding them together with English.

    Allow time to be cool.

Add some unity, understanding, and respect for the future,
    Serve with justice
    And enjoy.

Note: All the ingredients are equally important. Treating one ingredient better than another will leave a bitter unpleasant taste.

Warning: An unequal spread of justice will damage the people and cause pain. Give justice and equality to all.

    Benjamin Zephaniah.

It's different for the Spanish in the Southern States of the United States because originally at one point some of them were indeed Spanish colonies before the US took them! For some people that land might be ancestral so for them to want to outline the historical significance is understandable to a certain extent.

I don't think the Mughal's (not Mongols mind you) had captured much territory in Europe, especially any part of what is now the United Kingdom so things are a bit different.

For North America one must realize the only reason we speak English as a primary language is because we were colonized by English speaking nations. Had the Spanish colonized us we would be speaking Spanish, had it been the Japanese, well you get the point. One must also remember that originally North America was settled by people who were largely expelled from their homes, wanting a better life, etc. When they arrived here they too established areas, customs, etc to reflect their lives back home (New York, New France, New Jersey, Germantown, China Town, Japantown, etc). Then there was also that whole thing with the Native Americans.

Having taken a Religious Studies course in University and done a essay on just the topic, when it comes to "Sharia Law" there is more than meets the eye. They can be small things such as having Halal foods, a no interest banking system, etc. I really don't see how things like that can have any major effect on the non Muslim population as they are all voluntary things. Extreme forms of arranged marriage, multiple wives, etc can be seen as a violation of laws in a external country.

On topic, I don't see a problem with having a memorial of sorts for civilians killed in these conflicts. However, the group who is organizing the event has gone on record (in the same piece!) claiming it was motivated by publicity and stuff.
