    Hardly.

Florida was ceded due to a treaty with the US in 1821. The vast majority of the inhabitants at that time were not Spanish.

The Southwest territories were lost due to war over where the border between Texas and Mexico was to be. A war that Mexico lost.

Among other things, doesn't some of the architecture have a Spanish influence? You still don't need a huge population for the influence to take hold. Regardless, the original point I had was ancestrally some Spanish had lived in those areas so to a certain extent some of those movements may have been understandable. Since no part of the United Kingdom was ever "Muslim" occupied territory I can see where some of the controversy can come from.

If you want to go that route, then I suspect the Seminole, Apache, Comanche, Ute, or any other Indian tribe could make a similar arguement.

Yes, the point being one group might have a little albeit minor justification for trying to change something in comparision to others who may not be seen in the same light. I'm not saying either cause is wrong or right but merely something to consider.

I guess it was only a matter of time before this happenned, lets face it, Wooton Bassett hass gone from a small town showing respect in a dignified fashion to a media circus with everyone getting in on the 'sharing in the grief' bandwaggon. It was only a matter of time before someone decided to use this to their advantage (aside from the lieing twofaced press that is) and now it's happenned.

As for the protest, I'm all for it if held somewhere a bit more appropriate (sure, do it in Bradford or London, not fussed) but the way they are doing it is frankly inappropriate. On the other hand it is legal, people keep saying soldiers are fighting for their right to do this and that it is disrespectful to allow the march to go ahead. It is far more disrespectful to take a dump all over everything we are fighting for over here by stopping it. Dangerous too.

Anyhow, extremeists wanting to drive a wedge between moderate muslims and the rest of the population, the have started to achieve that. Maybe rather than doing exactly what they want and turning on all Muslims we should threat this march with the contempt it deserves as a cynical attempt to divide the British people and get us to force more people to their cause.

I'm always amazed at the Politicians being "appalled" when it is the 'laws' they put in place that allows the very actions they detest. If immigrants move to a 'better place' the first lesson they should learn (and pledge to abide to) is; it is the laws of that Nation, the history and blended culture of that Nation, the ASSIMILATION to that Nations heritage and ideals for which they desire to be apart. Those who just want to live where they can enjoy the fruits of others sacrifices without becoming a citizen in all respects are no more than leeches on society.
I've felt the same as has been mentioned previously in the thread, about those who immigrate to another country but want to live as they did in "their Country". Their laws, their culture, but our Country. It appears to come down to the attitude of, "let others fight for me, but let us all share the riches".

Mehar, that's actually a well reasoned piece (for a moment, I thought that it was our David Mitchell). What he says is a good argument for free speech. Maybe one of the most sensible articles on this issue that I have read.

    Thanks for sharing it.

Indeed, people complain about political correctness an yet stopping this march would be an excellent example of it (altering behaviour to prevent people from offending certain groups). Maybe if we all grew up, thickened our skins a bitand stopped making a fuss about things like this we would be able to accept that there will always be people who we find offensive and get on with our lives.

I don't support preventing people from making fools of themselves, so long at the same time we allow them to suffer the consequences of their actions.

A few years ago, the Mexicans in the area got involved in some very in your face demonstrations and paid for it with a backlash against their restaurants and businesses, many of which have now closed. One long-standing restaurant owner specifically was quoted in the local rag saying some provacative things. He lasted less than 6 months after that as his business dried up after he let his mouth get the better of him.

Thats exactly it, people can say what the want and if that causes a negative (but legal) response then that's their problem. That said, this is what the extremeists want, to turn people against moderate muslims, sadly most people are too dumb to see that and will play into their hands.
