ya know if these mid-east folk would quit poppin each other off to just make a statement.........dang, go build a velodrome and race, instead of blowing folk up for amusement or beheading individuals to fit your needs whatever that might be......

Erich, I kid you not; they did that in Afgahnistan!! Not the velodrome but they got a cycling team together and were planning to compete in the olympics! I saw that on TV about a year and a half ago. Will see if I find something on-line about that.

Scarcely two weeks after the Northern Alliance took command of Kabul, a bicycle race has been organised there. The 40 kilometre race took place between Kabul and Charikar, via the valley of Panchir, with a field of 20 riders. It was the first bicycle race in five years in the capital, and was held in honour of commander Ahmed Shah Masood, former head of the forces of the Northern Alliance, who was assassinated last September.

"When the Taliban were controlling things, we did not have the right to practise the sport (in public), it was very difficult," said Afghan Olympic Committee member Mahmoud Azani to Reuters Television. "Now, with our freedom, we can organise this race."

That's business as usual - alternative energy has been around for a LONG time - ie. how about the synthetic fuels Germany used in WW2. It's not profitable to cure the world's ills! The world will not wait until the wells go dry before other engery sources become prevalant. It's economics -when oil sources become to expensive to get to - and profit margins shrink -

Thanks for the information Gordon! I always like to get information about the future before the polititions start putting their spin on things. I have noticed that Europeans are buying and building more diesel cars than the US has been. I wonder if that hurts or helps ?

I don't honestly know if the number of people buying diesels does make much of a difference. There's still three types of fuel to choose from at the pumps, diesel is only one. I'm no biochemist (as you've probably gathered!), but all those barrels of oil are being refined into various types of fuel and their byproducts from the same initial amount. If people prefer one type over another, I'd imagine the industry would just change the process to reflect changing tastes. At least, that's how I think it works!

 

C'mon, TA. You live here in the states.When was the last time you've heard a radio or tv car commercial bragging about gas mileage? Diesel is still oil[although crude] and oil is non-renewable. What ever became of that gas made with corn,forget the name of it?

 

Methanol / Gasahol. Brazil is the leader in its commercial use. It is less efficient than straight gasoline however so even there there is a trade-off.
Actually, the US (and many other countries) could solve many of their fuel problems simply by converting power plant electrical production to mostly or all nuclear at least through the next 50 - 75 years (and until something better can be invented in the interm).
Yea, yea, I know, the "N" word scares many people but it is a practical solution to this problem unlike wind or solar or even simple conservation.

 

Funny you should bring that up TAG. I just got back from vacation and down the road from where I stayed is a powerplant called Zimmer. They orginially built it as a nuclear powered plant in the 80's for approx. a billion $ and then the people decided they did not want nuclear and they converted the plant to burn coal for anouther billion $.

Framer T, I can recall they tried methanol in the 80's and the alchol in the methanol ate the rubber fittings and hoses in the fuel systems and carberaters and caused lots of problems. They also tried compressed natural gas in State owned cars and trucks and school buses and city buses but dropped that too for some reason. But yes, what you are saying is true, no one cares too much about gas milage. (so far)
